Irvings uses VirtualSellers.com for
online security and order processing.
So, how safe is it?
VirtualSellers.com takes every precaution with
your sensitive information and explains how it works.
Consider how you use your credit card now. At restaurants or department stores or gas
stations or the grocery market your credit card is run through a machine (swiped) which
carries your credit card information via telephone lines to a credit card processing
center. This is safe because the phone connection is point to point and the transmission
is a series of tones and squelches similar to a fax machine's noise.
When you order from a catalog company you happily recite your credit card information to
the clerk. The clerk sends your credit card information over a different telephone line to
a credit card processing center just like above. While this method has been used for
years, there are two potential security issues.
Cellular and cordless phones can be
accidentally overheard by baby monitors and intentionally overheard by special scanners.
You should never use a cellular phone to transmit your credit card information - this has
been proven to be unsafe.
People within earshot (like your co-worker
in the next cubicle) can sometimes overhear your conversation and easily jot down your
sensitive information. This is not intended to cause paranoia in the workplace, but should
With VirtualSellers.com you will have a choice

If you are using Netscape or Microsoft

These symbols tell you that any information you send to us will be "scrambled"
using SSL technology. SSL (Secure Socket Layer) uses "Public-Key Encryption" to
exchange a session key between you and our server. This session key is used to encrypt (or
scramble) your transaction twice - when it is sent and when it is received.
So if someone had the technology to intercept your transmission, they would receive a
completely garbled confusion of keyboard characters and computer symbols, like this:
rendering the information useless.
Once the information is received by
VirtualSellers.com, it is sent for processing using the same methods as a face to face
transaction, via a point to point phone connection with the credit card processing center.
For added security, we will only ship merchandise to addresses recognized by your credit
card company as being associated with your account. If you need to ship to an alternate
address, we may contact you to arrange the details.
VirtualSellers.com is always monitoring credit card use for any "abnormal"
activity. While there are certainly many people that shop at more than one of the stores
that VirtualSellers.com represents, an unusually high spending spree will raise eyebrows.
